Somewhere in Colorado: Kit Carson County CarouselIn 1927, Elitch’s Gardens ordered a new carousel from the Philadelphia Toboggan Company to replace their original 1905 model. But instead of demolishing the old one, it was sold to an unusual buyer: Kit Carson County, out on the Eastern Plains. Local officials wanted a new feature for their county fairgrounds and got a pretty good deal on it, too, paying only $1,250. Today, the Kit Carson County Carousel is still operational, and even boasts some of its original paint. It has a fully functional 1909 Wurlitzer Organ—one of only three still in existence. At more than 120 years old, it’s one of the oldest amusement park rides in the country and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It opens for a new season on May 23! ... School of MinesArchitectural drawings of Colorado School of Mines’s Executive Building (left) and architectural details (right), made by Robert S. Roeschlaub, History Colorado, 92.275.399; 92.275.407Colorado’s first public institution of higher education, located in Golden, included military and divinity schools when it was purchased by the Colorado Territory on February 9, 1874. It became a state school when Colorado gained statehood two years later, focusing solely on the School of Mines. Architect Robert Roeschlaub was tapped to design the school’s new hub, which was completed in 1890 and now commonly referred to as “Old Main.” Later he designed the campus’s Engineering Hall as well. Roeschlaub also designed notable buildings around Colorado like the Central City Opera House, Pueblo’s Central High School, the Cheyenne County jail, and several churches and commercial buildings throughout Denver. ... Two Places at One TimeThanks to smart planning, one of History Colorado’s more popular recent exhibitions will soon be in two places at the same time, more than 256 miles apart! The Dry: Black Women’s Legacy in a Farming Community looks at the little-known history of a predominantly Black farming community in southeast Colorado and the legacy of the powerful women who built and sustained this close-knit community. The exhibition is opening on February 24 at the Creede Underground Mining Museum, a proud History Colorado Affiliate, and soon also in the lobby of Denver Center for the Performing Arts to commemorate the play Godspeed. ...
