ICYMI: Spy Source No MoreAfter nearly 51 years of public use, the CIA World Factbook has been discontinued. The CIA (yes, that Central Intelligence Agency) maintained it since 1943 with information and photos from the organization’s intelligence-gatherers who documented the borders, customs, flags, and militaries of the nations of the world first for their own use, then for other government agencies. A free, declassified version was unveiled to the public in 1975, and brought to the internet in 1997. The reference manual helped countless students with their homework. Fans of the World Factbook will now have to gather their global intel from other (less clandestine) sources. The Factbook and its readers did, for more than six decades. Its authors — some of the world’s best intelligence-gatherers, who contributed thousands of their own photos — kept the curated database updated and online for public use at no charge. The reasons stated were geopolitical and philosophical. But since we are talking about facts, it also is true that the Factbook went public in 1975 with lofty statements of purpose at a time when Congress was revealing abuses by U.S. intelligence agencies, including the CIA. ...
